In the category of “things you didn’t know you needed” or recent small purchases, I bought a box cutter that I’m really happy with.
I’ve been cutting boxes with these two small pairing knives that are dull and rather terrible. We use them because I bought them and it’s nearly impossible to cut yourself on them which makes them terrible as knives but decent for opening packages and cutting boxes. But still not amazing.
Recently one of the ends broke off of one just a little bit which sent me looking for replacements because they’re probably over 10 years old and may be nearing their end of regular near daily use.
This is what I came up with:
CANARY Corrugated Cardboard Cutter
- https://canary-usa.com/products/canary-box-cutter-original (seems like they can only be bought in bulk here)

It can open the taped packages and also saw through the cardboard in case you need to break down boxes for recycling. Because it’s serrated it can really speed through dismantling a box. Honestly possibly better than a box cutter that uses a razor blade.
While someone in the reviews says it’s still not dull enough for their kid to not cut themselves with it, I like the fact that I can just not pay too much attention while cutting and not worry about cutting myself.
I haven’t tried to cut on the level of detail shown in this photo but I suspect it’s actually possible.
