Lost River Cave (and butterflies)

Took a mini-trip out of town. First stop was the Lost Cave River. The boat tour isn’t too long but it’s fun and don’t miss the butterfly house.

Tear Jerker Car Show Masterson Station Lexington June 2011

So I thought this event was supposed to go until 6pm but when we arrived shortly after 5pm there seemed to be a mass exodus of cars from the park. So instead of really going to this I just pulled off to the side of the road and took photos of the passing cars on my iphone for 10-15 minutes.

What was really interesting was how the iphone warped the images of the moving cars but they looked stationary otherwise. Check out the wheels – warped but no blur! And it’s really hard to get the timing right for the car speed and the phone’s reaction time so not all of these are centered.

Frugality or making more money? Which will you choose?

In response to Ramit’s article on forgetting frugality:

http://bucks.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/04/26/forget-frugality-focus-on-earning-more/

There are 2 reasons I think financial talking heads focus on frugality over making more money (it’s also why I think he got so much negative feedback):

  1. The average American needs to LEARN how to not overspend and spend more than they make. So many people get out of control debt by living beyond their means. If you don’t learn how to control your spending your spending will just go up as your income goes up.Here’s a credit card, I’ll just buy a latte now, I need it. Lattes, the debt gateway drug (hehe.) Hey spock, it’s not logical, it’s emotional and people are bad at math, especially when there’s a credit card adding into the mix.
  2. Most of this country is not entrepreneurial minded. I noticed that a lot of people equated Ramit’s comment about finding something you love and make some money doing it = as doing something that drains them. There are a lot of “worker bees” out there who will either never get it or … a rare few who understand and are actually happy as worker bees (but they won’t be the ones submitting negative feedback because they aren’t unhappy about it.) Striking out on your own, even as a side project, isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.I do think there are more people out there with a hidden passion they aren’t pursuing and should and could to make money but it’s not everyone. Sometimes I think Ramit’s goal is to kick these people into action even if it gets negative feedback from so many others.

My personal feeling is that making more money or being frugal isn’t mutually exclusive. It also isn’t restricted to monetary and can include frugality (or efficiency) with your time. Excuse me while I drink my latte and get some work done.
